Things to know

You must keep your license information current.
Update your license on time:
- Individual licenses: report changes within 14 days
- Business licenses: report changes within 30 days
Allow time for processing. You can verify the update using the license search tool.
Once the update is processed, print your license online.

Important:

California law requires BAR to post your address of record and any enforcement actions online. (Business and Professions Code section 27)
You may use a P.O. box or work address as your address of record.
Be sure your mailing address is correct to receive BAR notices.

Vehicle license plate number (mobile automotive repair dealers)

*Business address changes: BAR must complete an onsite inspection of the new location before a station can perform inspections.

Report any change of controlling individuals, including:

Owners
Directors
Officers
Partners
Members
Trustees
Managers

Limited liability companies: If your LLC operating agreement does not allow member changes, see Change of ownership.

Change of ownership

If you have a change of ownership, you must apply for a new automotive repair dealer registration. You also must apply for new station licenses, if applicable.

Change of ownership includes:

Buying an existing business
Adding or removing a partner
Transferring ownership interest between family members
Changing the business entity (for example, incorporating)
Corporate changes that result in a new Secretary of State number

Important:

Registrations and licenses cannot be transferred.
New owners must submit a new automotive repair dealer registration application and any station license applications, with fees.
The business must stop operating until new licenses are issued.
BAR will work with new owners to help ensure a smooth transition.
