BAR-97 Emissions Inspection System requirements
The BAR-97 Emissions Inspection System (BAR-97 EIS) is required to inspect most model year 1999 and older vehicles. The system is certified by BAR and requires an analyzer, dynamometer, BAR-certified low pressure fuel evaporative tester, fuel cap tester, and other approved equipment and parts. BAR approved gases from a BAR-certified gas blender are required to calibrate the BAR-97 EIS.

Fuel cap testers and adapters
Fuel cap functional tests are required to be performed only on 1995 and older model year vehicles as part of a BAR-97 EIS inspection. Stations performing BAR-97 EIS inspections on these vehicles are required to maintain the fuel cap adapters listed in the table below for use when completing fuel cap functional tests.
