BAR Meets with JASEA to Share Program Information

On July 13, 2021, representatives from the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) participated in a teleconference with the Japan Automotive Service Equipment Association (JASEA) Inspection and Maintenance Systems Research Committee. BAR’s Engineering and Research team shared information on California’s Smog Check Program to assist JASEA in the development of equipment standards for their emerging Periodical Technical Inspection (e-PTI) program. BAR engineers detailed the equipment certification process, vendor roles, data acquisition device specifications, fraud detection, and connectivity requirements. Both parties agreed that thorough design, testing, and quality control are necessary for a robust smog inspection and maintenance program.

The teleconference also provided the opportunity for BAR and JASEA to share ideas on the development of international standards for vehicle safety inspections and manufacturer trouble codes. BAR looks forward to continued collaboration with JASEA and other international organizations committed to the advancement of international vehicle emissions and safety inspections programs. Their insights should prove helpful as BAR begins work to develop regulations to establish a new vehicle safety inspection program in response to AB 471 (Low, Chapter 372, Statutes of 2021).
