Step 2: Create a CalCareer Account

Visit www.jobs.ca.gov and create a CalCareer account. Once your CalCareer account is created, you will be able to:

  • Take an exam and review your results.
  • Create and store your job application.
  • Upload and store your resume.
  • Apply for job vacancies.
  • Track your application status.

Step 3: Take the Exam

Visit the CalCareers exam search and enter the classification of the job vacancy in which you are interested. View the exam posting and follow the instructions in the official exam bulletin to apply and take the exam.

Most exams are available online on a continuous basis. However, some exams, including the program technician exam, are taken in-person during a scheduled open exam period.

NOTE: In-person exams are offered on a limited basis each calendar year in various areas of the state. Check exam schedules to ensure you have taken and passed an exam prior to applying for a position that requires list eligibility through an in-person exam.

If you pass the exam, you will be placed on a certified eligibility list for the respective job classification and you may apply for the job vacancy.

Step 4: Apply

Click on the "Apply Now" button on the job posting for the position in which you wish to apply and log in to your CalCareer account. Follow the instructions to submit your application and any required application package documents such as a resume and/or statement of qualifications. BAR will review your application and, if you meet the necessary job qualifications, may contact you to schedule an interview.
