Income eligibility requirement

ATTENTION APPLICANTS: Submit your income documentation or check the status of your application online.

To see if you meet the income requirement, look at the chart below. Income numbers are based on 225% of the federal poverty level. You do not need to meet this requirement to be eligible for the vehicle retirement $1,350 incentive. You must meet this requirement to be eligible for all other CAP options.

Income documentation options

Option Income/benefits you receive What to provide
1 Public assistance Proof you are currently receiving public assistance (e.g., CalFresh, CalWorks, Medi-Cal, SSI, etc.). The document must be issued to you within the last 60 days.
2 Benefits Proof you are currently receiving unemployment, veterans’ benefits, or disability. The document must be issued to you within the last 60 days.
3 Social Security Your latest annual award letter or a bank statement from the past 60 days that shows your direct deposit.
4 Earned wages (Tax form plus pay stub) 1. Your most recent Federal 1040 or State 540 tax return (A W-2 is not an acceptable substitute), and

2. A current paycheck stub showing your year-to-date earnings, hours worked, and hourly wage.
5 None of the above - Wage History Report A current Wage History Report. The report will show your reported wages, even if they are $0.

You can request a Wage History Report from the Employment Development Department (EDD).

We encourage you to protect your personal identifiable information by removing confidential information. After we determine income eligibility, we securely discard all confidential documents.

Examples of confidential information include, but are not limited to:

  • Social Security numbers

  • Birth dates

  • Taxpayer identification numbers

  • Names of minor children

  • Case numbers

  • Medical records

  • Brokerage, bank, or other financial account numbers
