Comments and/or Prerequisites: Candidates with 2 years experience in the automotive industry seeking to get the Smog Check Repair Technician license can take this course and the Licensed Smog Check Repair Technicians can also take this class to renew this BAR Specified Training instead to comply with the ASE A6, A8 and L1 requirements.

Description

This course is a minimum of 72 hours in length and is designed for Smog Check Repair technician applicants who prefer an alternative test to the ASE A6, A8, and L1 requirements. Topics includes in this training include the following: General electrical theory and principles: test lights, jumper wires, and logic probes; digital voltmeters, ammeters, and ohmmeters; electrical circuit and component diagnosis; wiring diagrams, color coding, and numbering; open, shorts, and grounds; and intermittent and continuous electrical faults. Engine mechanical systems: four-stroke theory; camshaft and valve timing theory; Compression testing; cylinder leak-down testing; and diagnostic procedures to determine the cause of compression losses. Engine fuel systems: fuel delivery system including fuel pump and fuel pressure regulators; theory and operation of fuel injectors; fuel injector diagnostic procedures; and test procedures for fuel delivery systems and fuel injectors. Engine ignition systems: Ignition theory; ignition timing controls; and impact of ignition timing on vehicle emissions. Electronic controlled engine systems: Theory of computer input devices; theory of computer output devices; theory of computer operation; diagnostic procedures for locating computer communication faults; emission control systems; computer control systems; diagnostic systems and trouble codes; On-Board Diagnostics II (OBDII) and Mode 6 operation; Enhanced fuel evaporative systems; and scan tool operation and usage.
