The Bureau of Automotive Repair Celebrates 50 Years

Established in 1972 to protect consumers through regulation of the automotive repair industry, the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) is proud to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Since its creation following enactment of the 1971 Automotive Repair Act, BAR has protected consumers from unethical and unlawful business practices in the automotive repair industry and empowered Californians through consumer assistance programs. Legislation passed in 1984 made BAR the administrator of the California Smog Check Program and, as such, BAR has implemented programs to reduce vehicle emissions and improve air quality. Although much has changed since BAR’s beginning, the mission to protect and serve Californians remains the same.

Patrick Dorais, Bureau Chief, commented, “Born out of the need for consumer protections in repair transactions, BAR has grown to be a defining force in automotive repair regulation, vehicle safety, and emissions testing not only in California, but throughout the United States and abroad.”

Over the years, BAR has worked tirelessly to develop and improve programs vital to the protection of consumers and the environment and to strengthen regulatory functions to ensure a fair and competitive marketplace. Through the dedication of its employees and work with its various stakeholders, BAR continues to innovate and adapt programs and services in tandem with increasingly sophisticated automotive technology.

Dorais remarked, “Thanks to the hard work and dedication of staff, BAR will build on its 50 years of accomplishments and continue to evolve to meet future challenges.”
