Adding a Station to an Automotive Repair Dealer RegistrationWhat type of station(s) may I add to an existing Automotive Repair Dealer (ARD) registration?
You may add the following stations types to an existing ARD registration:
- Smog Check station - This includes Test-Only, Repair-Only, and Test-and-Repair stations. Stations must be equipped to perform Smog Check inspections and/or repairs, as applicable to the station license type.
- Lamp station - Official lamp adjusting stations must be equipped to test, inspect, adjust, and repair all lamps and related electrical systems on all vehicles.
- Brake station - There are three classes of official brake adjusting stations:
- Class A: Official brake adjusting stations must be equipped to test, inspect, adjust, and repair all brakes and brake systems on all vehicles.
- Class B: Official brake adjusting stations must be equipped to test, inspect, adjust, and repair all brakes and brake systems on all buses, trucks, truck tractors, trailers, and semi-trailers.
- Class C: Official brake adjusting stations must be equipped to test, inspect, adjust, and repair all brakes and brake systems on all trucks or truck tractors having a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of less than 10,000 pounds, all trailers and semi-trailers that do not use compressed air or vacuum to actuate the brakes, and all passenger vehicles including motorcycles and motor driven cycles.
In order to add a Smog Check, lamp, or brake station to your existing ARD registration, you must submit the correct application along with the applicable fees. Station applications are available at www.Bar.ca.gov, or by contacting BAR's Licensing Unit at (855) 735-0462 or the Department of Consumer Affairs' Consumer Information Center at (800) 952-5210.When does BAR issue the license?
Licenses will be issued only after the application and fees have been processed and a BAR representative performs an on-site inspection of the station to confirm that the applicant meets the qualifications prescribed by regulations.What are the license fees?

Are there any restrictions if I want to open a Smog Check Test-Only station and a Smog Check Test-and-Repair station?
Yes. Pursuant to California Code of Regulations section 3340.16 (g), a Test-Only station and a Test-and-Repair station cannot be located adjacent to each other, in the same business park, strip mall, or industrial complex if they have a common financial interest. Both stations must be either licensed as a Test-and-Repair or Test-Only station.Can I change my Smog Check station type?
If you wish to change the designation of your Smog Check station (i.e. from Test-and-Repair to Test-Only or vice-versa) you will need to submit a new application, SGS forms, and pay the appropriate fees. Also, you will need to specify the effective date of the change. Please be aware that there you will be unable to perform Smog Check inspections while BAR processes the change and schedules an inspection of your station.What if I move my station?
A registrant or licensee must notify BAR within 14 days of any change in either a mailing or street address. You can obtain a Change of Address form at www.Bar.ca.gov or by contacting BAR's Licensing Unit at (855) 735-0462 or the Department of Consumer Affairs' Consumer Information Center at (800) 952-5210. There is no fee for changing your address. However, if you own a Smog Check and/or a lamp and brake station and file a change of address, a BAR representative must inspect the location prior to your performing an inspection.Can I get a refund if I decide not to pursue the application?
